Living Wall Prototype
Community installation of the living wall at PARK is on schedule for May 1. We’ll be working in 2 hr. shifts from 8am-4pm. Volunteer schedule @ http://pomerenearts.org/getinvolved/volunteer.html
Here are the photos of the wall prototype using recycled house guttering and pressure treated 2′x4′s. The wall will measure 5′ high and 36′ long and will be planted in sod. More sod being installed on the ground as well. Hope it feels like the whole sod area has slid off the wall into the sand lot.
We’re still considering what material we need to use to keep the planting medium and sod in place. A sediment net? Bird netting?

System as seen from the side. Small angled pieces of wood screwed to the gutter will rest on the vertical boards. These will keep the gutter bottom at a 45degree angle. The boards will be spaced at 3' increments and angle ironed to the wall. The horizontal boards visible here are not part of the design.

The angle and shape of the guttering will be maintained by strapping the trough at each verticle. Ideally we would like to wrap the sod around the ends. This will take some experimentation. The look we're going for is a 4" thick sod box.

We're looking down into the guttering at a series of drilled 1/4" drainage holes spaced approximately 2" apart. We're wondering if we have to worry about the holes clogging with soil? Should we consider adding a small layer of gravel in the trough?
